On September 4th, 2024, the African Agricultural Transformation Initiative (AATI), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Sierra Leone, celebrated the launch of the Agriculture Transformation Office (ATO) during the Africa Food Systems Forum 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda. This event marked a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s journey towards sustainable agricultural growth, food security, and economic development.
A Landmark Milestone for Sierra Leone
The ATO will play a critical role in supporting the implementation of Sierra Leone’s “Feed Salone” strategy, a flagship initiative designed to revolutionize agriculture and achieve food sovereignty. The ATO will guide the country’s agricultural development by identifying key areas for transformative interventions, facilitating policy alignment, and fostering partnerships with both national and international stakeholders.
“I’m thrilled to celebrate this milestone. With AATI as a key partner, the ATO will serve as a driving force in helping us achieve our goal of transforming agriculture in Sierra Leone.” — Hon. Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sierra Leone
Bridging the Gap Between Strategy and Impact
During the fireside chat at the AFS Forum 2024, discussions emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between strategy and tangible impact. The ATO is uniquely positioned to address this challenge, ensuring that agricultural policies are not only well-crafted but also effectively implemented with accountability. The collaboration between AATI and the government of Sierra Leone highlights a shared commitment to turning policy into action, benefitting rural communities, farmers, and the broader agricultural sector.
“Successful delivery units are shaped by strong political will and backing. Other key success factors include effective leadership, sustainability, and the ability to remain flexible and agile.” — Ms. Safia Boly, Executive Director, AATI
Empowering Women, Youth, and Rural Communities
A core mission of the ATO is to empower marginalized groups, particularly women and youth, who are vital to Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation. These groups will be placed at the center of agricultural reforms and provided with the necessary resources, knowledge, and tools to thrive. This focus on inclusivity will not only foster economic growth but also create sustainable, long-term opportunities for Sierra Leone’s rural communities.
“Engaging women and youth in agriculture is essential, as two-thirds of the population is under 35. With 25% of GDP coming from agriculture, involving these groups is crucial for driving growth and transforming the sector.” — Ms. Safia Boly, Executive Director, AATI
The Power of Partnerships
The success of the ATO and the “Feed Salone” strategy relies heavily on strong partnerships and financial support. Throughout the launch event, this was emphasized as collaborations between key stakeholders were recognized as essential for scaling agricultural projects and meeting Sierra Leone’s ambitious targets.
“AATI will provide over 2 million USD to support 11 staff members at the ATO, driving agricultural transformation in Sierra Leone. With AATI as your partner, you can accelerate progress and scale forward to achieve impactful results.” — Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh
Looking Ahead
The launch of the ATO in Sierra Leone marks the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s agricultural development. This milestone represents a firm commitment to achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods, and ensuring the sustainability of the agricultural sector. With the support of AATI, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, private sector entities, and international partners, Sierra Leone is poised to lead a new wave of agricultural transformation in Africa.
The official launch of the ATO for Sierra Leone is not just a momentous occasion—it is a catalyst for change. As the global community observes, Sierra Leone is demonstrating that with the right strategy, political will, financial backing, effective leadership, and strong partnerships, agricultural transformation is not only possible but inevitable.
“The success of ‘Feed Salone’ lies in strong political will and backing. I am proud to work alongside AATI to make this vision a reality.” — Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh
